Freddie Freeman is worth the money he just signed for when it comes to his talent level, age and production thus far.
Yesterday, the 24 Year Old First Baseman inked a 8 YR deal worth $135 MIL with the Tomahawk Choppers. As someone who was just entering the 1st year of Arbitration Eligibility, he was bought out of that negotiation.
The Braves will pay more money in the short – term, but will make up for it in the long run – by not having to dole out 200+ MIL bucks for the guy once he could have hit Free Agency.
Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward are the future of this team. Having said that, Freeman has displayed a little bit more consistency in his play to start their Careers. In 1908 AB so far (about 3 full years), Freeman has a 3 Slash Line of .285/.355/.466 with 68 HRs and 280 RBI. 2013 saw him make his 1st ALL – Star Game, and finish 5th in NL MVP Voting by going .319/.396/.501 – with 23 HRs and 109 RBI despite missing 15 games in 2013. Freeman inked a 8 YRs/$135 MIL deal on Tuesday – while Jason Heyward settled for a 2 year contract worth $13.3 MIL deal yesterday..
Lets just say that Atlanta would have paid Freeman $35 MIL over the next 3 years (2014 – 2016) in Arbitration cash. Would you not then extend this ALL – Star to a 5 YR Deal worth $100 MIL.
Absolutely you would. 25 other MLB clubs would have done the same deal.
It simply doesn’t matter that the fact he has the 29th biggest contract ever in the game. Pujols, Fielder, Votto, Teixeira, Cabrera, Mauer and Adrian Gonzalez all actually make more money at the position of 1B.
If Freeman keeps up his upward trajectory, he will easily fall into the stratosphere of talent of some of these guys.
Take a look at this years Free Agency class as well, the man could have garnered this money if he was flat-out available.
Atlanta gets their new leader locked up – ensuring Freeman will play more than a decade for the club. In today’s terms, that rarely happens.

Turner Field will only be the Braves home for the next 3 years. Based on the new revenues that will be generated on the new park, having the marquee offensive player wrapped up for the 1st 5 years of the new stadium makes perfect sense. The Atlanta Braves can also afford to pay Freeman this kind of money because they are not tied to blasphemous long – term deals. The worst deal they have on the board with B.J. Upton is a horrific salary at $60 MIL for the next 4 years, however it will carryover one more year into the new park. Justin Upton may not be in Atlanta long-term now based on this deal for Freeman.
