Haley Smilow is a lucky baseball fan/writer/reporter. Recently last summer, she was able to interview Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins.
Interviewing MLB Athletes is nothing new for our Junior Reporter. Over the last few years, Haley has interviewed Curtis Granderson, A.J. Pierzynski, Cody Ross, Barry Enright, Justin Turner, Casey Janssen and 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen.
The MLB Reports is very happy with the hard work and dedication Haley puts forth for her interviews. She has a great future in the business!
The MLB’ers like Haley because she doesn’t act cookie cutter questions. She asks them to delve into their own personal lives, and for this, she is able to crack up these guys from their usual monotanous answers.
HS: What is your favorite ballpark other than Marlins Park? And is there ballpark that you feel you play particularly well in?
GS: I play very well in Denver and my favorite ballpark is probably Dodger Stadium because I grow up watching the Dodgers play.
HS: Are you happy that the Dodgers are in town and you get to play them today?
GS: Yeah because I am on TV in California and more friends and family get to watch me and it’s always cool playing them.
HS: What is the best baseball town in America?
GS: Miami of course (chuckles about answer).
HS: Where does your love of baseball come from?
GS: Ever since I was a kid my dad would take me to the park and throw as many pitches as I wanted and I would hit it as far as I could and just doing that and being with him was cool.
HS: People who influenced you the most?
GS: My dad and everyone around me. You can learn from everyone so I try to take a little bit from everyone.
HS: Best advice anyone ever gave you?
GS: Never change and always be the same. Always work hard and never give up.
HS: Who are some of your peers that got game?
GS: That are good players is what you mean? (Laughs) Everybody all 24 guys on the team.
HS: Your sports hero when you were younger?
GS: I would say Mark McGwire.
HS: Player you learned the most from?
GS: The older guys they have the knowledge of the game that us younger guys don’t and you learn from them what to do in situations and stuff like that.
HS: What players, past or present, you would pay to watch play?
GS: Barry Bonds.
HS: If you were not playing Baseball what else could you see yourself doing?
GS: Playing football.
HS: What team you think you would play for?
GS: Probably like the Patriots.
HS: What other sports do you like besides baseball.
GS: Basketball and Football.
HS: Are the LA teams your favorites?
GS: Lakers are.
HS: What super hero would make the best baseball player and why?
GS: What super hero has a stick? Someone who could read minds so you know what pitch is coming.
HS: What is your favorite thing to cook?
GS: Steak and fried eggs.
HS: Best baseball movie?
GS: Major League.
HS Top 5 songs on your iPod?
GS: “Hypnotize” by Notorious Big, “This or That” by Black Sheep. Lets see here, what are your top five songs? (Laughing together)
I don’t update it a lot so I don’t know, but pretty much anything that’s on the pop radio stations.
HS: What are your walk up songs?
GS: “Versace” by Drake and “Clique” by Rick Ross.
HS: What is the best way to break in a new glove?
GS: You have to oil it up a little bit and just play catch with it.
HS: Which is better, Stickball or Wiffle ball?
GS: Wiffle ball for sure.
HS: If you could change one thing about baseball what would it be?
GS: Either instant replay or having a DH in the National League.
HS: What is the best practical joke you have ever seen? Have you been a victim of any practical jokes?
GS: I have had someone put eye black in my hat before and you put it on and you cant see it and you have it all over your forehead.
HS: Have you ever done any practical jokes?
GS: Yeah, we have wrapped clothes up and dip them in water and then in the freezer. That’s a good one.
HS: What advice would you give kids?
GS: The same advice I got. Never give up! If you start something finish it!
