MLB Shutout Survivor 2014: Texas Were Shutout Last Night, Leaving COL + LAA Left

It is quite surprising that the Rangers held out this long when you consider the power outage from Prince Fielder – couples with injuries to Adrian Beltre and Shin-Soo Choo, but they were blanked for the 1st time last night in the 2014 Season.

Sonny Gray of the Oakland A’s threw a Complete Game Shutout against them, and Yu Darvish so his lifetime record fall to 1 – 7, with a 5.23 ERA versus the Bay Area franchise.

The Rangers have scored 1 run on multiple occasions this year, but had yet to be bageled.

The Angels beat the Indians last evening, by scoring 8 runs.  They have not been blanked.  The Rockies also used a HR barrage to knock off the SF Giants, and run their streak of not having zero runs in the year yet.

The Angels have used hot starts from Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton (before he was injured) - to be the last remaining squad in the AL to be Shutout. They just came back to Los Angeles (arriving at 5 AM yesterday morning from the ESPN sunday night game in New York) to beat the Indians 6 - 3. It was a huge road trip that saw them swing through Detroit, Washington and New York.

I have to go with Colorado as the favorite out of these last two clubs.  The ROX have 6 regulars in the lineup hitting over .300 – with many of them having a high propensity for the long ball.

Among the only few position players not to be hitting .300 is Carlos Gonzalez, who you have to feel is about to take off. He is just that caliber of player.

Troy Tulowitzki reached base 5 times last night – from a HR, 2 Doubles and 2 Walks.  The SS is now featuring a 3 Slash in 2014 of .366/.476/.720 – with 6 HRs and 20 RBI.

If TULO has this type of season, he will win the NL MVP for sure, and the Rockies will contend for a playoff spot.

Justin Morneau also has 6 HRs and 21 RBI and a 3 Slash of .351/.376/.628.  Charlie Blackmon is the other guy doing massive damage, at an NL Leading .389 with an OPS of 1.080 – to accompany 5 HRs and 18 RBI.

Colorado has an offense that is looking like the Pre-Humidor Rockies squads that had video game numbers.

The Angels have enjoyed hot starts by Albert Pujols and Mike Trout, and despite this team Striking out a lot, the guys are finding key times to place their hits.

Los Angeles continues a series with the Indians at home for the next two days.  The Halos’ just returned from a decent 5 – 5 road trip that saw them have to travel to Detroit, Washington and New York.

The fact they escaped that time on traveling across the country facing those good teams without being Shutout is a feat.  LAA is once again just one game below .500 on the season heading into tonight’s action.

With Trout and Pujols doing their magic, it may take a huge pitching effort from a team to have these guys not score a run in a game.

Encouraging is the offense is looking good, only if they can figure out their Bullpen, they could ascend to the top of the AL West Standings.

2 teams yet to be blanked:  Rockies and Angels.

Texas did an awesome job not being Shutout until this late into the season when you factor in slow stats for several offensive weapons - and injuries to some of their core players. Texas has lost back to back games after tying the A's for 1st place prior to Sunday's game. The Rangers have Shutout their opponents 5 times, and had eliminated 3 clubs from this competition, so their 3rd place finish is well deserved,
