SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Texas Rangers catcher Geovany Soto has had arthroscopic surgery to remove a small bone from his left foot.
Soto had the surgery Saturday, a day after returning to Texas to be examined by a specialist for what the team had initially called an Achilles issue.
What doctors determined instead was there was a bone putting pressure on a flexor tendon.
Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine says Soto could be fully back in action in about three weeks. That would be about two weeks before the start of the regular season.
Soto is expected to be the starting catcher this season. Texas also this offseason signed J.P. Arencibia.
Without surgery, Soto would likely have needed a series of injections to get through the season.
