The Marlins have one of the most prolific young power hitters in the game of baseball in Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton has 3 years left of Arbitration before he will be eligible for Free Agency heading into the 2017 season. Still, his price tag is only going to keep increasing so the franchise will have to act fast to keep their beloved outfielder in Miami for the long-term.

Giancarlo Stanton is one of the most talented young hitters in baseball. He is a tremendous athlete with ridiculous power that already has 117 Major League home runs in less than 500 games.
Luckily enough for the city of Miami, they will likely get to enjoy watching Stanton for a couple more years, as he won’t hit free agency until 2017.
However, the club won’t have a competitive team during that time frame and it would make a lot of sense for their front office to do everything in their power to sign Stanton to an extension.
It still remains unlikely that Stanton will want to stay in Miami and the Marlins will be willing to shell out the money to keep him, but if an extension is going to happen, it will happen sooner rather than later.
Giancarlo Stanton’s 2013 Home Runs
Stanton’s 494 foot bomb he hit at Coors Field in 2012 is the second longest Major League home run of the last five years. The MLB Reports has predicted a breakout season for the young slugger, potentially winning the HR crown. This will escalate his salary demands in going forward.
Giancarlo Stanton deserves to hit a big payday.
He’s under contract with the Marlins until 2017, but if the Miami want until then to offer him a contract extension, they likely won’t be able to afford what other teams could offer him.
Stanton is only 24 years old, causing most to believe that he hasn’t even hit his prime yet.
Reasons Stanton might accept a contract extension at this point might include the guaranteed job security, the ability to secure his future regardless of injury, and maybe, just maybe, he wants to stay in Miami.
The Marlins currently have a payroll of about $40 Million, and that it should stay around there for the near future.
New catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is signed for $7 M in 2015, and $8 M the year after that, but other than him, the franchise doesn’t really have any expensive players signed into the future.
There is absolutely no way that the organization will be able to keep Stanton in Miami when he hits free agency. They don’t have close to enough money and Stanton would be ridiculous to want to stay in such a losing environment.
This is why I think if the club plan on having Stanton as part of their future, they need to act now.
Miami has expressed interest in extending Stanton, but it has been made clear that both sides aren’t talking about an extension.
Keeping Giancarlo Stanton in Miami isn’t going to come without a huge sacrifice from the Marlins front office, and that’s a sacrifice I don’t think they are willing to make.
Sure, having Stanton signed into the future would provide the team with a cornerstone in their lineup, a dynamic hitter that could lead them back to the playoffs.
But if the Marlins can’t risk spending that type of money on just one player, chances are they aren’t going to do it. It will be a sad day for Miami fans when Giancarlo Stanton takes the field in a different team’s uniform, but at this point in time, it looks inevitable.
Giancarlo Stanton should contend for the NL HR championship crown in 2014. He is capable of cracking 40 – 50 HRs if he can play a year completely healthy. The Marlins are lucky to have one of the best young hitters in the game on offense, and to also have Jose Fernandez as their #1 Pitcher. Finances dictate the club will only be able to secure one long term – and Fernandez has more years left of team control, and is going to cost the team less cash. Miami finished the 2013 campaign with a 63 – 99 record – and are likely to not compete for at least a few years. By then, the RHB will cost too much money for the Florida franchise.
